It’s beginning to look a LOT like Christmas

One of the reasons I really wanted to come to the United States at this time of year was to experience what I imagined to be an over-the-top northern hemisphere Christmas.
The decorations, the shop windows, the trees, some snow, carols…all in a cold weather setting.
The stuff that we grew up watching on American TV show Christmas specials.
And I haven’t been disappointed. The collage of trees is just a small sample of the ones we have seen.
We have our own tree too. The owners of the apartment we are renting had very thoughtfully bought one ready for us to put up when we arrived.

We’ve since added a heap more decorations and lights (we couldn’t resist).

There’s so much talk in the media and on the streets here about the economy and how bad it is. You wouldn’t have guessed yesterday on Fifth Avenue. It was wall-to-wall crowd, all out for ‘Super Saturday’ – the biggest retail day before Christmas. The shops do seem to have a lot of stock though, and almost everywhere is offering sales, sometimes up to 70 per cent off original prices. (If only the Aussie dollar was a little stronger…)

Despite the insane crowds, shop assistants are unfailingly polite and cheerful. Christmas songs play in every store.

I loved Demi Lovato’s version of ‘Wonderful Christmas time’ to start with, but if I never hear it again, it will be too soon.
