Po Nagar Cham Towers

One of the top sights around Nha Trang is the Po Nagar Cham Tower complex just north of the city centre.  These towers were built by the Hindu Cham people between the seventh and twelth centuries, and like many other historic sites, have taken a beating over the years. There is an extensive restoration project going on though, and there are four impressive towers remaining.

Luckily I don’t have a lot of cleavage to show…

Cham worshippers to the towers would have entered via this (now roofless) meditation hall, and would then have climbed those practically vertical steps in the background.

Nowadays, tourists enter via a gently inclined curved path to the side.

The lighter-coloured sections tend to be areas that have been restored.

Inside a tower the  fog of incense creates quite a striking atmosphere.
Tomorrow: we’ll be up to our necks in it…
