Sorrento (NOT the one near Portsea)

From Pompeii it is around an hour’s drive onto our next destination – Sorrento. A drive which is spectacular, but a little bit winding! Traffic often slows to a crawl, and as we edged down towards the town of Meta and the start of the Sorrentine Peninsula there was plenty of opportunities to take photos from the car.

The girls were happy to arrive in Sorrento and begged me to cancel our return car transfer to Naples and to go on the local train instead (as it goes straight through tunnels rather than hugging the coast).

Sorrento itself is a fun town, full of little laneways with interesting shops.

Citric produce (is that even a word…citric? I don’t know, but I like the sound of it) is a speciality of the region.  The limoncello (a lemon liqueur) is an odd, but quite delicious, after-dinner drink, which originated on the island of Ischia, but is ubiquitous across the Sorrentine Peninsula and Amalfi Coast.

You can spend whole days in Sorrento just wandering around, admiring the views.

Tomorrow…Positano
