Around Georgetown

George Town is the capital of the state of Penang, and is named after King George III.  It was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light,  who was a trader for the British East India Company. He obtained the island of Penang from the Sultan of Kedah and built Fort Cornwallis on the north-eastern corner of the island in order to establish base for the British East India Company in the Malay States.

In July 2008, an area of George Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This protects the existing buildings and features from being demolished or removed.

Old signage remains above many of the shops.

The colours of the buildings are beautiful.

I took this photo especially for all my patchworking friends.

We sought out this cafe (Cafe Amelie) after reading interesting reviews of it on the web. But it was closed.

However our trip wasn’t in vain, as just around the corner we stumbled onto some of the street painting project which had been created for the George Town Festival 2012. The project consists of  a number of large-scale wall paintings throughout the core heritage zone of George Town, by artist Ernest Zacharevic. You can see him talk about the project here.

We also found another of his paintings, but you’ll have to wait for a later post to see it.
