Memorable moment: Venice Grand Canal

Dateline: 17 September 2011. Early afternoon.

We had arrived at Venice’s Marco Polo airport via a long Emirates flight from Melbourne to Dubai, and a shorter one on to Venice. At the dock, we bundled ourselves and our luggage into a water taxi for the 20 minute journey across the lagoon and along the Grand Canal to our hotel.

Speeding across the lagoon, the wind in our hair and the majestic outlines of Venice’s iconic buildings in our sights, became our own personal ‘James Bond’ moment.

And as we turned into the Grand Canal, I watched the expressions on the girls’ faces. Through them, I relived the awe and wonder I experienced the first time I saw Venice.
