Ask Google about New York City? Ask Fairlie!

This post is part of a regular series of weekly “Ask Google? Ask Fairlie!” posts. Today we’ll ask Google about New York City. I type the start of a question into Google and based on the Google auto-completion suggestions, I find out what most people are wanting to know. Then I answer those questions myself. Who needs Google when you can ask Fairlie?

What is New York…

What is New York like?

Oh, Googlers…don’t just ask this question. Get yourselves over there, find out for yourself. New York City is fabulous. A city that literally never sleeps. Hot and sticky in summer, bitterly cold and snowing in winter, and everything in between, in between. It’s loud, it’s abrasive, it’s crowded, and yet there are quiet, little sanctuaries of calm in unexpected spots. It’s a city that just brims to overflowing with possibility, from the naive optimism of the newly arrived, to the hardened toughness of the born and bred. It’s an urban metropolis made up of small villages. A melting pot of the world’s cultures. It’s skyscrapers, honking cab horns, the bright lights of Broadway. It’s museums and galleries. It’s the broad avenues and leafiness of Central Park, and the chutzpah of street performers. It’s a magnet for travellers from all around the world. Be one of them.

What is New York cheesecake?

You don’t know New York cheesecake…? You haven’t lived.  Classic New York cheesecake is a baked vanilla cheesecake which, in addition to the usual Philadelphia cream cheese, also contains sour cream and more than a few eggs. It’s fluffy, rich and creamy and has just the right amount of crunchy light biscuit base. I make a fantastic one. I just have to remember to buy ingredients before every shop closes for a public holiday.

What is New York famous for?

I can’t believe people are Googling this? They really don’t know what New York is famous for? How about we start with Time Square, Central Park, the Empire State Building, Fifth Avenue, Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, The American Stock Exchange, the Rockefeller Centre, 9/11,  the Waldorf Astoria, Brooklyn Bridge, the Metropolitan Museum, the Rockettes, Harlem, Ellis Island, MOMA,  FAO Schwarz, Friends, fashion, food, shopping, theatre, jazz clubs…

Is New York…

Is New York a state?

There is indeed a New York state…and a New York city. Hence the city’s title: New York, New York (no it’s not a stutter, or the repeat of lyrics to match a melody). New York State is the third most populated state in the US, and is 141,300 km in area. It is bordered by the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and by Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. To the north (and west-ish), the state of New York shares its border with Canada. New York City is the biggest city in New York state and the most populous city in the United States. It  includes the boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

Is New York an island?

Ooooh. This is a trick question. I’m sure some of you jumped in with a YES! New York IS an island. But hang on a minute, Googlers. Manhattan is an island. New York City (which comprises  the five boroughs…were you paying attention above?) is not an island. And the state of New York definitely isn’t.

Is New York safe?

For those of us who grew up on a television diet of American cop dramas, New York seemed like a treacherous place. Stabbings in Central Park, shootings in side streets, car theft, tourist muggings. Plus, of course, the ever-present worry about terrorist activity, particularly post-9/11. However, since the 1990s crime rates in New York City have dropped significantly. It’s still better to be safe than sorry, though…so, like any travel destination, it pays to be vigilant about personal safety and possession security. And I always check out the latest updates at the Australian Government Smart Traveller website before I go anywhere.
