The Melbourne suburbs: School fetes

I’m sure it’s not particular to Melbourne, but around this time of year you can be just driving along minding your own business when you suddenly come across a school fete.Yesterday we stopped by one which was bigger than big. Stalls galore, rides for the kids, food and drinks. My cousin and I wandered into the book stall.’Stall’ is a little of an understatement. It filled half the school hall, with box after box of books laid out within type (fiction, biography, parenting etc) and alphabetically on trestle tables. The books were all tagged with a coloured dot to indicate price, with the most expensive being $2.

For someone who has taken a vow not to buy any NEW books this year…it was like a kid being let loose in a toy shop with a platinum American Express card.

But I showed some restraint, and just bought a few titles that grabbed me, or that looked like good pool/beach books for the summer.

All this for a ten buck note…
