Yum. Yum Cha.

I think there is something very civilised about a method of eating which involves small platefuls of a variety of foods being brought to the table to be shared.
In Melbourne, Sunday Yum Cha is a bit of a tradition.
Yum Cha = “drinking tea” in Cantonese. Yum Cha is used here in Melbourne to refer to the dining experience of eating small servings of different foods, eg steamed dumplings, spring rolls, pork buns, fried chickens’ feet at a Chinese restaurant. In some places it is also known as Dim Sum. The plates of food are brought around the tables and you choose whether or not to accept them. If you do, a note is made on the bill tab which stays on your table.

We always say yes to the chilli fried whitebait.

Removing the lid of the teapot is the universal sign for “We need a refill”.

There’s nothing neat and tidy about a Yum Cha meal.

Everyone has their favourite restaurants for Yum Cha. One of ours is a suburban restaurant where the decor is Dallas ranch-style meets Chinatown.
